The Lord of the Obscure descended to the 6th Layer without so much as a notice.

Bondrewd, talking about Srajo

Srajo "The Mysterious" ( (しん) () のスラージョ, Shinpi no Surājo), also known as the "Sovereign of Mystery" ( (しん) () (きょう) , Shinpi-kyō), is a legendary White Whistle Delver of The Abyss.[1] Srajo is the captain of a delver group known as Hail Hex and is currently conducting a delve into the 7th Layer of The Abyss.[2][3]

Since she is a White Whistle, she is presumed to have made amazing discoveries within the pit and retrieved Artifacts that have changed the world. Like most White Whistle Delvers, she settled on the 5th Layer and lived there for some time, since it is the last point of the Abyss where it is possible to return alive.[4]

Appearance[]

The Sovereign of Mystery is an enigmatic figure, shrouded under a cape and hiding her face behind a mask that resembles a plague doctor mask with three holes.[5] Her whistle is sculpted into the shape of a set of four wings.[6]

Under her outer outfit she wears a jacket that exposes her stomach and sternum, as well as a ragged cape. The front part of her cape holding her white whistle is brimming with other whistles of all ranks. It is unknown where she got these whistles or why she has them.[7] Her hair is light in color and has several abyss swirls and mis-colored patches, looking somewhat like beast ears. Her eyes are also very light and intense, with sharp eyelashes and eyebrows.[7]

Personality[]

To the public, not much is known about her personality. However, the fact that she was seemingly comfortable occupying the harsh environment of the 5th Layer, suggests that she is single-mindedly focused on the Abyss.[8] Betraying her ominous title, she is shown to be quite brash, impatient, and outgoing.[9][10]

History[]

Spoiler warning: The following section contains spoilers. Read with caution.

Curse Fleet Arc[]

Soon after, the group arrives at the outpost of Hail Hex in the 6th Layer.

As they enter it, they are greeted by a member of Hail Hex who welcomes them. Inside the outpost, Nanachi marvels at the amount of equipment and shortly afterwards they are addressed by the boss of Hail Hex who is cooking food in a big pot. As the conversation progresses this boss tells them that the goal of Hail Hex is to reach the deepest depths of the Abyss and asks what Riko's goal is.[11]

As Riko counts in her mind the many goals she and her group still has she says there's quite a lot. After hearing that, the boss of Hail Hex introduces the Curse Fleet Delver Troupe, Hail Hex, and afterwards herself as the Captain, Srajo. She praises Riko and shows her recognition as White Whistle, however, she also suggests that they will have to put Riko through her paces first.[12]

Srajo tells the story of her own encounter with Bondrewd prior to going into their Last Dive; Bondrewd senses that someone unusual has come and tells Gueira to call Bido and Rimeyo's squads to the main gate in preparation. Srajo enters Ido Front together with her group, Hail Hex, and salutes but is then stopped by white cloaked Umbra Hands and talks back aggressively, to which her underling recommends she holds back as they're the so-called Shroud with burial clothes. Bondrewd comes and asks for what business might they have come for, Srajo replies that she's looking to use the Altar. Bondrewd then tries to stop her by telling her it is required to send a report to the Delver's Guild which can take up to 7 days local time.[13]

Srajo tells him she has no time to wait. As her underling interjects with the truth that they're in chase of one of their members who ran off into the 6th Layer looking for The Priestess, Bondrewd is surprised that she would go onto her last dive on such ambiguous conditions even after reducing herself to a coward and insists that she must send a request back to the Guild.[14]

Srajo has had enough and tells Bondrewd to tell it straight. Bondrewd reveals that she herself is allowed to go with proper procedures but as the Hail Hex group, with the exception of Srajo, is made up of so-called Juusou, beings that should not exist that are used as offerings right after being born, it would be a waste to let her valuable relic and her valuable group to go to a land they will not return from. Srajo commands their team to 'take their Release Stance' and prepare for combat.[15]

As Srajo ends her story and compliments the team for coming out without being canned by Bondrewd, Nanachi points out that this fight might be the reason why Bondrewd was lacking on fighting bodies when they arrived. Srajo presents the team the spiky place in which the testing will take place and reveals the testing is about whether they're the Shrine Maiden's scattered bait or not.

Srajo explains they win by bringing Nishagora down into the ground, independent of how many people it takes them, and if they win they'll get to exchange information. Reg volunteers himself alone but Riko and Prushka will accompany him with a blow of the whistle. As they get into position, Srajo signals the start of the battle and the rest of the team stand as spectators.[16]

Faputa notices that Srajo is preparing to do something just as Reg is getting the upper hand on Nishagora and his time activated is running out. Srajo then hands down the creature on her neck and commands Sherumi and Menae, the puppet-like members, to take the "Wave-proof Stance". As Reg tries to end it quickly by pulling Nishagora down, Srajo blows on her whistle and activates Nishagora the same way Reg does, turning her fur almost all white.[17]

Reg gets to stand back up and kick down on Nishagora, and as they exchange blows and cover themselves, Tepaste, being held by the other member of Hail Hex, calls out to everyone that the water for the bath is now boiling. Srajo proclaims that the test is now over and they must take the children into the bath, Nishagora asks Reg if they should go in together.[18]

As Srajo introduces the members of Hail Hex: "Combatant" Yataramaru, "Charger" Nishagora, "Snipers" Sherumi and Menae, prisoner Tepaste, and "Store-House" Frapam, Riko takes the opportunity and asks what a Juusou is. Srajo for the sake of brevity states that Juusou are "those born as Narehate" among "those born within the abyss", Riko is astonished as she has never heard of this but Srajo points out that this information is withheld among only a small portion of individuals, even including White Whistles, since the disposing of narehate with their humanity intact is part of the "disgrace of delver history" as she puts it.[19]

Srajo in turn, asks the members of Team Riko to introduce themselves. Riko is the only one to introduce herself.[20] Srajo then shares her goal of finding the rest of The Song of Hariyomari and Nanachi introduces the rest of the team excluding Faputa's origins.[21] After Reg is taken for assistance, Nanachi overhears Yataramaru whispering to Srajo about a "Girl-type" so they feel compelled to reveal their suspicions that Reg might've been one. Srajo infers from Bondrewd's usage of the Sparagmos and sightings of this Girl-type around Ido Front that Reg also possesses this "light". Riko cannot hide her surprise and Srajo is satisfied with that.[22]

After sharing a meal, both teams prepare to set out on a temporary joint expedition until they can find a place to base in the 7th Layer.[23]

Srajo offers to share parts of the Hariyomari Collection in advance due to the unfamiliar dangers ahead. She also offers the name Hello Abyss, Links of the Netherworld, for Riko's team before finally heading out.[24]

Riko's team investigate a phenomenon in the 7th Layer, a sizzling substance at extremely low temperatures, which attracts Srajo's attention, making her guess what their roles are in the group.[25] Riko asks about what "souls" are, to which Srajo points out that souls do not exist outside the Abyss and are not what one normally knows as souls but instead are "signals" which take on many roles in the Abyss.[26] Srajo thinks the purpose of the soul's existence is as a "pre-processing" given that they hold a lot of information and Riko suspects that the soul is what's behind the Birthday-Death Disease as does Srajo, saying that its true form is the "Breath" described in the original scripture.[27]

Nanachi inquires about resurrection, with Mitty in mind, but Srajo is doubtful whether such a thing is possible. Riko encourages Nanachi not to lose hope, citing all the inexplicable phenomena that they've encountered, revealing to Srajo that Faputa is immune to The Curse.[28] As both groups move forward, they are stopped by their senses being negated and are suddenly attacked by a creature, Nanachi moves in to protect an attack on Sherumi and Menae and Reg extends his arm in an attempt to save Nanachi.[29]
