Information

The Hammerbeak (ツチバシ, Tsuchibashi) is an avian species whose habitat extends from the surface down to the 4th Layer of The Abyss.[1] They are quite numerous and commonly seen in the most shallow areas of The Abyss, observable with a simple telescope from houses in Orth.[2] They appear to be quite fond of shiny things and, as such, will collect them in their nests.[3]

Description[]

Their most iconic trait is their hard beak that is fused with their skull. They use it when engaging in hostile situations with other creatures and they move in large groups relentlessly assaulting their victims.[1] If one of their own is attacked, the whole flock will retaliate.[4] They will also take advantage of weakened opponents that have suffered severe wounds even if the opponent is a far more powerful creature, like a Crimson Splitjaw.[5]

Male Hammerbeaks in dispute with each other will bash their heads against each other. The headbutts of two Hammerbeaks often produces sparks, showcasing their sturdiness.[1]

Because they are usually not very big and their beak is all they have going for them as a mechanism for defense, they are not quite so fearsome and represent a minor danger to Delvers; even in groups. Their meat is delicious and is a very convenient source of food for Delvers. Their beak can also serve as a flint, cookware or a container, so catching one will provide a meal and the tools necessary to prepare it. Their feathers also work well as high quality live coals.[1]

Trivia[]

  • On the 4th Layer, they can be seen nesting on Kenzan-Creeper, the plant beams that hold up the Flat-creeper.[6][7]
  • Their eggs are a key ingredient for Nanachi's Netherworld Stew, the freshly laid eggs being best.[6]
  • The wingspan of an adult Hammerbeak can exceed three meters.[1]
  • The beak fused with the skull is less strongly developed for the females of the species.[7]
  • Their subspecies, the Giant Hammerbeak, has a more developed skull than the regular species and also has patterns on its head.[8]
